Principal’s Message

I am sending out our Newsletter a bit earlier than usual this week to help keep everyone informed of important school happenings.

**Please note that there will be no EDMO (our afterschool program) tomorrow on Friday, March 20th**. Families should plan to pick up students at regular dismissal time. We anticipate increased traffic due to all students being picked up at the same time, along with families coming to campus for conferences, so please plan accordingly and allow extra time. Thank you in advance for your patience during this time.

This week, we have had an awesome time hosting Student-Led Conferences. Our scholars have done an excellent job sharing their learning, reflecting on their progress, and identifying areas where they want to continue to grow. It has been inspiring to see students take ownership of their learning and proudly present to their parents and guardians. We commend our scholars and staff on their efforts and a job well done.

We also kicked off our Book Fair, and students have been excited to explore new books and share their favorite parts with one another. It has been great to see their enthusiasm for reading across campus.
In addition, we have been enjoying Spirit Week, with both staff and students participating in the fun. Tomorrow will be our final dress-up day, Pajama Day, and we encourage everyone to join in if they are able. Reminder: School ends at 12:50 pm tomorrow.

Looking ahead, we will begin Spring Break for the next two weeks, on Monday, March 23rd through April 3rd. Students will return to school on Monday, April 6th. We hope all of our families enjoy a safe, restful, and enjoyable time with one another.

State Testing Update

Monterey Peninsula Unified School District March 2026

  Dear Parent/Guardian:

Students across California will be taking several mandated statewide tests. These tests provide parents/guardians, teachers, and educators with information about how well students are learning, and becoming college and career ready. At the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, these test scores are just one of multiple measures in which we use to evaluate student progress. Provided below are the various mandatory assessments that will be administered this spring.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Assessments

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) computer adaptive assessments are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics tests are administered in grades three through eight, and 11 to measure whether students are on track to college and career readiness. In grade 11, results from the ELA and math assessments can be used as an indicator of college readiness.

California Science Tests (CAST)

The new, computer-based CAST measures student acquisition of the California Next Generation Science Standards. It is administered in grades five, eight, 10, 11. The new computer-based CAST replaces the California Standards Tests (CST) for Science.

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California

This spring is the second administration of  the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC). ELPAC is aligned with the 2012 California English Language Development Standards and taken by all English Learners.

Physical Fitness Test

The physical fitness test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FitnessGram®. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting lifelong habits of regular physical activity. Students in grades *five*, seven, and nine take the fitness test.

To learn more about either the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, review the Parent Resources available on the CDE webpage: https://www.cde.ca.gov.

The testing window for our school is . April 6 - May 8

Sincerely,

Principal Breland

Parents and guardians: You are an important part of your child's education. Some things you can do to help your child are:

  • Talk about the test with your child. Make sure they are not scared or anxious.
  • Tell your child that you and his teacher have high expectations and that you both are there to help, every step of the way.
  • Take a practice with your child.
  • Make sure your child gets a good night's rest and a nutritious breakfast before testing.
Around The Campus

Spring Picture Day will be Tuesday April 07, 2026

Our weather forecast projects that it will be a warm day tomorrow. Please encourage your scholar to bring a water bottle that they can use and refill to stay hydrated and stay cool at school.

Marina Vista's Daily Attendance Goal is 96% & Chronic Absenteeism Goal is 10% or Less

The graph below represents Marina Vista's average daily attendance (ADA) for each day of the month, as well as our current chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more of school) rate. Monday's continue to be one of our most impacted days, however this Wednesday was also impacted. March overall we are a little lower in meeting our goal for attendance and falling behind in chronic absenteeism. Please let us know how we can support you in getting to school daily and on time. Be sure to ask our team about Short Term Independent Study if you are in need.
